Austinmer

The Moore Street district in Austinmer has a distinct culture that is underpinned by the local architecture and local personalities - Fireworks Cafe is a great example of both.... a fine old building and the effervescent charisma of owner and chef, Scotty Russell.

Fireworks Cafe was built in the 1920's as a butchery, apparently with no electricity (evidenced by the wiring later being added externally), next to what was then the general store (now Haveli), with the old post office (now a bridal boutique) making up the trio.

CHRISTIAN Power has been working solidly in the music industry for almost 30 years.

He regularly performs live on stage with his three piece band, Lonesome Train. The band also tours, having recently returned from Tamworth.

Notably, the band performed ‘two tours of duty’, entertaining the troops in the Solomon Islands in 2011 and East Timor last year.

“I loved hearing about Bob Hope and the Andrew Sisters doing this type of thing decades ago and it was something I was thinking about, so when my agent suggested it, it was easy to say, ‘yes’.”

BUSINESS PROFILE: MEZALUNA GOURMET DELIVERY

Juggling a love for delicious healthy food with a busy lifestyle has become a lot easier thanks to the owners of Mezzaluna, a local business specialising in nutritious home cooked, home delivered meals and event catering.

Diane Nealon and Charlotte Rourke started Mezzaluna in Austinmer three years ago. With young children and busy lifestyles they understand the time demands that providing nutritious balanced meals takes. Both women are passionate that meal times should bring people and families together and be a time to share and enjoying terrific healthy foods regardless of schedule. With backgrounds in training and hospitality they set about building a business providing nutritious healthy meal solutions for busy people and families.

BUSINESS PROFILE: IVORY & LACE BRIDAL BOUTIQUE

Ivory & Lace is a stylish boutique that is relatively new to the Sea Cliff Coast, located in a heritage listed building, near Fireworks Cafe in Moore Street, Austinmer.

Jennifer Lowe is the owner, long-time resident of the northern suburbs and mother of three, who lived in Africa for a period, and after returning to Australia, moved from Woonona to Austinmer.

Jennifer says, "I am passionate about the business and the personal private service that I am able to provide for brides who come from near and far to make a selection from the gorgeous gowns I have available from a number of Australia’s finest designers."

THREE subjects many people do not like to think about, talk about or take action on until it is absolutely necessary are death, taxes and bush fire.

On the eve of Tuesday, January 8, a series of catastrophic fire warning messages were sent by the Rural Fire Service (RFS) to all land-lines and mobile phones in the Sea Cliff Coast area. At that moment, all residents and visitors were thinking about, talking about and taking action to limit the threat of bush fire.

Check out the fantastic bookmark created by Austinmer Public School as part of the National Year of Reading 2012 - it stretched all the way around the playground, and while it didn't quite make the Guiness Book of Records it is being claimed as Illawarra's longest book mark!

AUSTINMER Dance Theatre will perform five new works at the Phoenix Theatre in Coniston next month as uNCOILEd takes to the stage.

One of the pieces, Sanbiki No Kashikoi Saru, was arranged by the troupe's Patron, internationally renowned choreographer Maurice Causey, who travelled from Europe to conduct dance workshops with the group last September.

Artistic director Michelle Forte said the company was "extremely proud and excited" to be performing the piece.

Scouts

By DR RON WITTON

In November 1923 the 1st Austinmer Scout troop was formed and this early beginning, some 15 years after scouting began in England, meant that it became one of the Illawarra’ s earliest scout troops.

On Saturday, September 4, 1926, the 1st Austinmer Scout Troop gathered for the laying of a tablet commemorating the almost-complete scout hall that still stands in Moore Street.
