Helensburgh

Here's a chance to get rid of your stuff and (in a weak moment) buy someone else's stuff by being a part of the Helensburgh Public School Car Boot Sale, Sunday 2nd June. Books, CDs, toys, glassware, plants, tools, cushions, clothes, crockery, crap - it'll be great!

What is the ONE thing you wish you could do but don’t? What is holding you back? Usually it is fear. Fear of the unknown. Fear of not being good enough. Fear of failure. Fear of judgement. Fear of standing up for yourself. Fear of confrontation. Fear of standing out.

You’d be surprised at how many people actually do have a business idea, a dream, a goal – but more than 90% don’t even get to first base.

Although Helensburgh Workmen's Club began trading on shaky grounds it has survived to become the Illawarra's oldest operating registered club.

Born from a dispute with the town's two publicans, the Helensburgh and Lilyvale Workmen's Club was established by a group of coal miners in 1896.

A local postie was recently on the receiving end of some "negative feedback" when he attempted to remove the swimming cap and googles, t-shirt, bike tyre and running shows from the coalminer statue that sits outside of Helensburgh Post Office.

Over the last 5 years, the statue has become a focal point of the town for locals to celebrate specific events, usually sport, but has also been used in a similar fashion to commemorate the passing of notable residents.

Reflexology, or zone therapy, is an alternative medicine involving the physical act of applying pressure to the feet, hands, or ears with specific thumb, finger, and hand techniques without the use of oil or lotion. It is based on what reflexologists claim to be a system of zones and reflex areas that they say reflect an image of the body on the feet and hands, with the premise that such work effects a physical change to the body.

Helensburgh has recently added a qualified Reflexologist to its growing ranks of professionals in the health industry, with the arrival of Clare Bowley from the UK and her business, Nurture Reflexology.

Medical research and back-up means that the average life expectancy is increasing. Australian men (79 years) and women (84 years) are ranked 4th and 3rd respectively internationally for life expectancy. Australian society is aging. Physically we hit our peak in our early to mid 20’s, thereafter physiologically we’re on the downhill spiral. How quickly we take this slide is largely dependent on the lifestyle choices we make.

There are many quiet achievers in our community - at various times and in different capacities, everyone lends a hand to make sure things go well for their local sports club, school, group, or club - this input of energy and passion is the glue that binds us together, and preserves the quality of life that we cherish (and perhaps sometimes take for granted), along the Sea Cliff Coast.

There are several groups that have been instrumental along the way to help keep things in balance, including Stanwell Park CWA, Bulli Rotary and Helensburgh Lions Club.

There is growing momentum around the issue of plastic bags, with recent screenings of the "Bag It" documentary, and local advocates initiating ideas to reduce their use.

On Tuesday 30th April, the Sea Cliff Community comes together to discuss the use of single
use plastic bags and the concept of a 20c plastic bag levy.
