A RECENT dining experience at a waterside seafood restaurant in Brisbane left me as non-plussed as the watery, tasteless Moreton Bay bugs.

It was my father’s 85th birthday – a milestone in anyone’s language but even more important for a lung cancer sufferer who was already two years past his use-by date.

SHAMEFUL. That’s the only way to describe Wednesday night’s neighbourhood forum meeting in Helensburgh which saw an influx of “interested parties” at the expense of the regular attendees.

A core group of about 10-15 residents turn up at NF1 meetings every month, no matter what the weather or their circumstances. These regulars thought they would be deciding who would be their next spokesperson on matters of local concern but the NSW tradition of branch stacking proved otherwise.

THE four-year-old grandson was visiting on Australia Day so I decided to tell him what the day commemorated.

“So why is it a celebration?” he asked innocently.

Indeed.
